Creating sculpture is a means for self-expression, and an outlet for communicating my interpretation of the world. I carve wood and blow glass to create mixed-media artwork. I am intrigued by the natural grain patterns and various tones found in wood. An evolution of growth and change are exposed through this map-like life form. Molten glass is similar, in that when malleable, it retains a memory as it is shaped and can be built in layers. Adding texture, color or surface patterns to glass can transform its character, and allow it to exist as in the form of another material. The qualities and possibilities inherent in these mediums compliment and visualize my artistic conceptions. My work is driven by the ideas of development, change and transformation. I am interested in how relationships form and depend upon a balance. Making art encourages introspection on the past, to discover personal values that shape life. I strive to achieve self-discovery through my work, and also to enlighten or renew the perspectives of others. I believe, while some seek to understand reality, artists create their own reality.
